iMessage brings the functionality of iPhone messaging to all of your iOS devices―iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Built right into the Messages app, iMessage allows you to easily send text messages, photos, videos or contact information to a person or a group on other iOS 5 devices over Wi-Fi or 3G.
But with the recent update of iMessages, you can transfer any type of file from your MAC to any of your iOS devices say iphone, ipad and ipod touch. Though this is the beta version of the messages app and we can expect more features when the stable version will release. Sending files from MAC to your iPhone is very easy and you just need to do two things.
Do You Know ? How to Send Free Messages to iOS 5 users using iMessages
Just drag the file you want to send from your MAC to the Messages chat window and click on the send button. Its just like we are doing chatting in Gmail and sending messages to each other. The Mountain Lion is right now available for developers only to test and there are in numberable new features to try once it will release other than the updated Messages app. This new messages app is just like iChat file transfer that can send audio, video and picture files.
Currently, there is a limitation for the sending and receiving files using the Mesaging app. Both the sent and the received files end up at the following location:
/var/mobile/Library/SMS/
This new Messages app feature supports these type of files : Songs (.mp3), Ringtons, Videos, Photos, Text, Scripts, PDF . Other than these, You can also use this service to transfer/send files such as: .deb, .IPA and more, even folders (which automatically archived into .zip).
Of-curse, you can also send any other file, even if they are not supported in iOS.
And you need to jailbreak your device in order to access this directory besides having knowledge of the command line and an SSH client for the file transfer within the iOS file system. For example the .deb files can be sent but can’t be opened via Messages app.
